One Day Workshop: Spaces of Youth Citizenship

Tuesday 17th January 2012

Department of Geography, University of Leicester

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS AND SHORT PAPERS

Booking is now open for a one-day workshop that will bring together social researchers from a range of academic disciplines, along with non-academic practitioners, who are interested in the study of youth citizenship.  The workshop aims to provide a space to discuss the interplay between youth, citizenship and education and to provoke possible new directions that consider the role of space, place and mobility in the complex geographies of citizenship and youth.

Keynote Speaker: Professor Rachel Thomson (Open University/Sussex University)

Invited Panelists: Dr Tom Cockburn (Social Sciences and Criminal Justice Studies, University of Bradford); Dr Jo-Anne Dillabough (Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge); Dr Jane Pilcher (Department of Sociology, University of Leicester); Graeme Tiffany (Federation for Detached Youth Work); Dr Fiona M. Smith (Geography, University of Dundee)

In addition to a keynote lecture and panel session, there will be more interactive discussions to foster critical engagement with key conceptual, theoretical and methodological questions relating to research on youth citizenship.  If you would like to present a short paper or discussion piece (10 minutes) on any of the above themes, please send an abstract of no more than 200 words to Sarah Mills (sm599@le.ac.uk) by Friday 4th November 2011.

The cost for attending the event is £10 (free for unwaged or postgraduate) which includes lunch and light refreshments.  However, places are limited so booking is required by Friday 2nd December 2011.
